This Practical Elite Katana from Hanwei is part of the Performance Series of Swords, a line that focuses on the quality and affordability of the sword. This ensures that martial artists and practitioners have access to high quality swords that stands up to tameshigiri.
Forged from 1566 high carbon steel, the addition of manganese in this material results in a mostly uniformed hardened microstructure after differential heat treatment and clay tempering. This produces a blade that is tough and holds its edge well despite extended use. The edge hardness for this blade is estimated to be around HRC60 while its spine is around HRC40.
Like its other peers in the series, the affordability of this sword is attributed to the simple design. For this reason, this katana is equipped with a plain maru gata (round) tsuba, fuchi, kashira, seppa, habaki, and menuki. The tsuka is covered with white same and the tight tsukamaki uses black imitation leather tsuka ito to give its wielder a secure and comfortable grip, ideal for practice. This katana is then completed with its black lacquered saya with black sageo.
