You'd be surprised at how many common clothing items have their less than humble beginnings in military outfits. Your favourite Wellington rain boots were named after the General who used them to battle in muddy conditions in the 18th century, and First World War. Or did you know that trench coats get their name from the fact that the first official design was designed for the British Military in 1901. Everyone loves Aviator shades, developed in the 1930's for American pilots. Even high heeled shoes can be traced back to 10th century horsemen and cavalry, heels help shoes stay in stirrups btw.

But what does this have to do with anything?

Enter Hero's Army Surplus, A surprisingly stylish clothing store.

This week on my semi-regular trip to Hero's I was browsing for some stocking stuffers and on a whim, I wandered over to the clothing section in the back to peruse the shelves. I dug through the mounds of fatigues, cut through a forest of parkas, and made my way to a thicket of coats on a circular rack that stood apart from the rest. For some reason I felt a need to rifle through the rack, through high vis vests and ponchos until my hand fell upon a soft, woolen lapel.

Intrigued, I pulled up the hanger and beheld a beautiful navy blue pea coat. A classically cut, double breasted affair that looked amazing! I knew at least a few people, myself included who would want one. With a quick question on sizes answered by the friendly staff my cart got a little bit heavier. Browsing the shelves some more I even found some stylish Aviator shades and a few shemagh scarves that I knew would make a great outfit, and even better stocking stuffers.

Thanks Hero Outdoors, Santa's Unlikeliest Elves.
