After a good deal of “Resist and Bite,” and receiving liberation following WWII, Belgium was in need of a new helmet as it rebuilt its army. After going through the British Mk-2 helmet and their domestic M49 variant, they settled on the M51 in 1951, as the helmet's name references. The Belgian M51 Helmet and many other helmets by fellow post-war NATO nations is a clone of the iconic WW2-era American M1 “Steel Pot” helmet, famous to this day in films such as Saving Private Ryan.

The Belgian Defense Forces(Dutch: Defensie/French: La Défense) continued to use the M51 well into the 90s, as its reliable nature held up through the Korean War and countless peacekeeping operations. These helmets can still be found in war to this day, popping up in the occasional African conflict.
